Domestic Energy Assessor Training

Since November 4th 2007, all domestic properties put up for either sale or rent within the U.K. require an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The EPC provides potential tenants/home-owners with information regarding the energy performance of the building, as well as providing cost-effective recommendations for reducing household energy bills.

EPCs can only be completed by qualified and accredited domestic energy assessors. The assessor is required to survey properties and obtain information relating to the following aspects of the building: construction type, property form, building dimensions and heating/hot water systems. Assessors then enter this info into a recognised software program which will analyse the information and produce a certificate which rates the building’s energy performance.

ABBE Qualification

The training course is comprised of both classroom-based and site-based learning elements.  You will be required to attend an initial three-day training period for the qualification, which will cover the following subjects:
  • Background to EPC legislation within the U.K.
  • Housing type and construction
  • Space and water heating
  • How to conduct a site visit
  • Software training
The three days of training are intended as an overview of the qualification, and will introduce you to the most important aspects of carrying out assessments on domestic properties. Following the three training days, you will be required to complete two forms of assessment in order to attain the full qualification. You will need to:
  • Pass an exam based upon the DEA course syllabus. The exam will be a 20 question multiple-choice exam, and will test your knowledge on the various aspects of the qualification. A score of 70% (14/20) will be required to pass.
  • Complete a portfolio of 5 EPCs on a range of domestic properties. You will need to complete EPCS on a series of different houses, each with a different construction type and age band. Each EPC is required to be completed to a professional standard, ensuring that you are familiar with the different dwelling types that you will encounter once qualified.
Once you have completed both forms of assessment, you will be awarded the full qualification.

Candidates can work through the qualification at their own pace. The exam is scheduled by ABBE to take place every month, and you can be entered as many times as you require to pass (hopefully not many!). Your portfolio will take time for you to work through, and we recommend a period of about 12-14 weeks as a realistic timeframe. It will clearly take either more or less time dependant on the amount of time you can dedicate toward completing it.
